Asha’s community based centre at Anna Nagar slum colony was in a dilapidated state making it increasingly unsafe to carry out day-to-day activities.
Addressing this, Asha’s beloved builders’ team from Ballymena, Northern Ireland decided to repair and refurbish the building when they came out to volunteer with us in October 2014. They completed all the repairs and were able to finish much of the brickwork and plastering during their one week at Asha. Thanks to their amazing hard work and support from the community (who worked hand-in-hand with the team), the centre now looks brand new and the community and staff are excited to start working in it.
On 17th December, Asha’s Programme Manager, Ms Kiran Gera inaugurated the newly refurbished centre amidst great joy and cheer. The community had made elaborate preparations to celebrate the joyous occasion. While women and children addressed the gathering and recounted all the work that has been done over the years, the children’s group staged a one act and many danced to popular numbers.
The Asha team and the community at Anna Nagar send out their heartfelt thanks to the builders’ team, their families and friends in Northern Ireland who generously contributed towards this project.
