Dr Kiran warmly greets the High School Toppers
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
– Nelson Mandela
Asha high school toppers were warmly welcomed by Dr Kiran and the Asha team May 31. Dr Kiran whole heartedly applauded each one of them for scoring brilliantly despite living in utter despondency. Even though many of the students struggle to arrange a full square meal a day, yet they keep their heads high with such wonderful results. “With such good marks, wherever you all [Asha students] will go, I am confident that you will be successful, and of course Asha will always be with you,” assured Dr Kiran.
The communities of Zakhira, Chanderpuri, Kanak Durga and Peeragarhi did a stupendous job with the students scoring over 92% wherein the remaining other communities like Dr Ambedkar colony, Kalkaji, Ekta Vihar, Seelampur, Tigri etc. faired brilliantly as well. Dr Kiran spoke with each one of them asking about their percentages to what they want to pursue in graduation. The hardships these youngsters have faced and/or are still facing is indescribable. Before Asha intervened, some were rag pickers, some used to work in small street vendor shops while others used to just sit at home and do household chores. But since Asha came into their lives, it did not only bring opportunities for them, but brought ‘hope’ as well. Hope for a better future and a better tomorrow!
Praising the Asha team for their immense patience in grooming these students and helping them to perform so well in academics, Dr Kiran shared, “I can’t thank my team enough. They have been with me for many years now, and without them nothing would have been possible. What you all have done is extremely commendable.”
Looking at this year’s high school toppers from Asha slum communities one can hardly wonder how so appropriate the aforementioned quote is! Education certainly improved the worlds of these many lives, and the beaming joy on their faces said it all. Each one of them is a ‘Hero’ as quoted by Senior Programme Coordinator, Ayesha. We couldn’t be more proud of them!
