Indian Minister for Science and Technology at Asha
It was a great joy to have Dr Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, visit us on February 19, 2016. Dr Kiran and the Asha team welcomed him at the Asha Polyclinic and Diagnostic Centre which was followed by a visit to our community centre at Kanak Durga slum colony.
At the polyclinic, Dr Kiran gave him an overview of Asha’s work in the Healthcare sector, and how our interventions are benefitting thousands of slum dwellers in the city. The minister was pleased to note how the Asha programme and services have expanded since his early introductions to the work in 1990’s.
At Kanak Durga slum colony, Dr Harsh Vardhan was welcomed with great warmth by the slum dwellers. The Asha Students Ambassadors described how even with minimum amenities, they have been able to cover the journey from slums to higher education and now jobs at leading MNCs.
Moved by the real life stories that the students shared with Dr Harsh Vardhan, he quoted, “It is amazing to note how you all [Asha students] have been able to study and excel in a tiny one room house that turns into a kitchen and dining room in the morning, a living room in the evening and a bedroom at night.”
Later the members of Women’s and Children’s group also shared stories from their past, and how their association with Asha has brought great changes in their lives.
“I don’t think there’s anything left for me to say, after listening to all that you have been doing at Asha… All I can say is that dream! Dream big, for your country, your city, your society, your family and for your own self. Each one of you has the potential to make a difference,” remarked Dr Harsh Vardhan.
Thank you, Dr Harsh Vardhan for taking out the time to visit us!
