Nuffield Scholars Visit Asha

Nuffield Scholars Visit Asha

We at Asha were happy to host a 10-member team from Nuffield who were visiting from different countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom on 20th of June. Ignoring the heavy rain, the team was excited to visit the Asha centre at Kalkaji. They were amazed by how Asha has been relentlessly working towards transforming lives around Delhi.

At the Kalkaji centre, they met the Children and Women’s Association who welcomed the guests with sheer humility. The Children’s Association enthusiastically shared their dreams and aspirations whereas the Women’s Association talked about their challenges, their struggles and how their living standards have improved in the slums ever since Asha stepped in.

The team also met high school toppers and college students and applauded them for academically being brilliant, despite the hardships. They were overwhelmed by the way the Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) work in the communities, breaking the barriers of the patriarchal society they lived in. “We have come a long way – from our family being totally against the fact that we go outside to work, and now they support us and even help with household chores,” remarked Gyanwati, an Asha CHV.

The team were in awe when they got to know about the women community in the slums and how empowered they are and yet so humble. The visitors also talked about the importance of having Women’s Associations in the slum and the benefit they can reap.
