Asha Celebrates Christmas
In the past week, Asha has been organizing Christmas celebrations at our resource centres in different slums. The celebrations comprised of song and dance performances by Asha children’s group members and the attendees were community members, women’s groups, CHVs and Asha college students. For the kids, the highlight of the day was the arrival of Santa who distributed gifts to all the children. After the song and dance was over, there were refreshments for everyone.
On 20th Dec, Asha invited some of our college students over tea to the Asha Headquarters to celebrate Christmas. It was a wonderful way to catch-up with how the students were doing as another college semester comes to end. The students shared cheerfully how much they enjoyed going to college and how they were progressing in the studies.
Anu, an Asha college student from Ekta Vihar slum colony is pursuing B.Com from Sri Aurobindo College. His father who works as a gardener always wanted his son to attend college but never had enough resources. He was however very reluctant to additionally send his daughter Anita for higher studies. After a lot of persuasion of the Asha staff, he finally agreed. Anita is now in the first year of her Bachelor’s degree in Sanskrit from Sri Venkateswara College, one the most prestigious colleges of Delhi University. Though Anita could not make it to the polyclinic that evening, her brother says on her behalf that she is very happy to be able to study.
As a Christmas gift, the students were all given new clothes which they could wear to college. These students come from the poorest families in the slum and good clothes only help them to develop a positive self image so they don’t feel out of place in the college environment.
We would like to thank our supporters for their Christmas donations. In this difficult time when we are going through a lot of financial pressure, it is only because of people like you that we are able to do all this for the children.
We wish all our supporters a very happy Christmas and a wonderful year ahead!
