We were all deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of James Gray on 22nd October 2014.
James was an Undergraduate at St Andrews University studying Mathematics. Prior to St Andrews he attended Strathallan School in Perthshire. He was a talented young man who excelled in his studies. In the last couple of years he had battled with a form of depression. Sadly he lost this battle on the 22nd of October and took his own life.
In September 2011, along with two friends from school, Alex Falconer and Doga Makiura, he spent time volunteering in an Asha community at Kalkaji slum colony.
He brought great joy into the lives of the students during his time there. He taught them English and through this, established a wonderful bond with them. His family felt that it was the time when he was really happy. When he returned from India he continued to support the work of Asha financially.
In memory of James, there was a prayer meeting held at Kalkaji, in which the Asha team and James’ friends from the slum community participated. It was a time of deep sorrow and shock for the entire Kalkaji group when they first heard this news.
All of his friends at Kalkaji and the entire Asha family would like to thank his family and friends for trying to help good to come out of this sad loss by helping out slum children come out of poverty (via this fundraising page created in his memory).
Here are some beautiful photos of James during his happy times at Asha –
