Asha hosted East Meets West, an evening of dance and music, to honour volunteers from India and around the world. The program was an amalgamation of Western and Indian culture. From Dr. Kiran’s performance of Lata Mangeshkar classics, to Irish whistling and Bhangra, the event was full of energy and fun.
Dr Kiran commenced the evening with a performance of the Indian national song, Vande Mataram, after which she melodiously sang some of Lata Mangeshkar’s (also known as the Nightingale of Bollywood) most popular hits.
The “East” part of the evening consisted of Asha student dance performances of Rajathani and Punjabi folk songs, an upbeat Bollywood routine and a Qawali song. Student Ambassadors, who choreographed the performances, and the performers, for many of whom this was their first time on stage, had worked extremely hard to put the event together.
The “West” performances were presented by volunteer teams from the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. The group from Ballymena Academy of County Antrim, Northern Ireland introduced us to the lovely traditional sound of the Irish Whistle, sang harmoniously as a group and danced with fierce liveliness to “Wakka Wakka.”
Royal School, Armagh, Northern Ireland shared a captivating rendition of Vance Joy’s song “Riptide” – a merry dance to Smash Mouth . They also presented a traditional song about the County Armagh.
St Stephen’s Church wowed the audience with a guitar and singing performance of Pharell William’s “Happy”, an astonishing gymnastic performance and a stunning solo performance of “This is Living.”
Overall, East Meets West was a wonderful success. It was very special to see the pride and talent of the Asha children. It was also exciting to observe the extraordinary artistic capacities of our volunteers. We at Asha are very grateful for the thoughtfulness, time and love our international allies share with the Asha communities and we look forward to working together with Ballymena Academy, Royal School Armagh, and St Stephens’ Church far into the future.
