Asha’s women celebrated the International Women’s Day across slum communities on March 8, 2016. They took this opportunity to appreciate each other’s contribution towards a better tomorrow.
While some women decided to celebrate this day with a potluck lunch at a nearby park, others invited local leaders, MLAs and police officials to a get-together, in order to strengthen their relationships and thank them for their continued support.
At Seelampur slum colony, the Women’s Association members invited the Municipal Councillor and local leaders to share with them the recent developments, and to thank them for their consistent support. The Councillor appreciated the work that the women were doing and motivated them by extending his support always!
Nearly 100 women from Kanak Durga, Kusumpur Pahari, Ekta Vihar and Dr Ambedkar slum colony came together to celebrate the day at a local Park. They invited the SHO of Crime Against Women’s Cell – Ms Alka Azad. Ms Azad appreciated the women’s efforts towards gender equality and motivated them to join self-defence trainings organised by the department. She shared, “Our girls are still suffering from molestation and are not safe in the city. We have to change that. Consider us [the police force] as your friend – we exist to empower and protect you!”
Also, the young girls participated in the celebrations with great enthusiasm. The girls from Kusumpur Pahari presented an interesting theatre performance based on the issue – ‘Gender Equality’, recited a self-composed poem on ‘Female foeticide’, and even spoke about the importance of women in the society.
