It began with a beautiful get-together of Asha students and the teams of The Dunclug School, The Sherborne Area Schools’ Trust and The Wallace High School from the United Kingdom at the British High Commissioner’s residence. Sir Dominic Asquith KCMG, who is the British High Commissioner to India, graciously hosted a High Tea to honour the Asha students who secured academic excellence in national school leaving exam and undergraduate studies.
Sir Asquith addressed the gathering by sharing his association with Asha. He praised the students for overcoming the struggles of living in a slum and successfully fighting all the odds. Congratulating the Asha students for their achievements, Sir Asquith applauded the efforts of Asha Society towards transforming the lives of slum dwellers for over three decades. “The thing I am so impressed with the Asha is commitment and drive to transform, not the single life but the whole community,” said Sir Asquith.
After his eloquent speech, Dr Kiran Martin, Founder and Director of Asha society, thanked Sir Asquith. She shared Asha’s journey so far and laid emphasis on how the students at Asha have been standing out in their respective fields. She also thanked the British High Commission for their long-standing partnership with Asha, that symbolises our joint belief in the equal worth of every person and common humanity.
The highlight of the evening was when Tushar, an Asha student from Mayapuri slum colony, pursuing History Hons from one of the most prestigious colleges of Delhi University, shared his inspirational story of transformation.
Ian McBride from British Telecom, our new partner was inspired by Tushar’s speech and shared his willingness to continue supporting the cause of Asha.
