For 35 years, Anita has lived in the Jeewan Nagar slum, a place she and her husband moved to from West Bengal in search of a better life. However, their reality was far from what they had hoped for. She started a small vegetable cart, waking before dawn to travel by public transport to the market, carrying heavy baskets of fresh produce. Day after day, in scorching summers and relentless rains, she stood by her cart on the roadside, serving customers until late at night.
At first, Anita had no knowledge of Asha. But as she saw women in her community finding strength and independence through Asha’s programs, her curiosity grew. The day she stepped into an Asha center changed everything. Asha not only guided her but also reshaped her thinking. She learned the importance of education, how to access government support, and most importantly, how to advocate for herself and others.
Asha taught her the power of self-reliance and dignity. While many women in her community spent their free time idle, Anita chose to invest in her family’s future. She never missed an Asha meeting or event, always ensuring her cart was covered so she could attend and learn.
Her determination paid off. With Asha’s support, her children not only completed their education but also secured respected jobs. Today, all three work as sales executives in a reputed private company. “If our mother had not worked tirelessly to educate us, and if Asha had not supported us, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” they often say.
Anita is no longer the hesitant woman she once was. Today, she walks into government offices with confidence, advocating for her community without fear. Her resilience and strength have made her a role model—not just for her family but for the entire neighborhood.
