Asha celebrates the acceptance of the slum students into Delhi universities
On July 17th and 18th, events were held at Asha headquarters to congratulate about 80 of the class 12 students from Asha slum who have received acceptance into Delhi University. The events started with words of encouragement from some of the students already attending college through Asha’s Higher Education Programme. Having gone through the same process once, they adviced their juniors to never underestimate themselves and always consider themselves at par with those from more fortunate backgrounds and continuing to work hard.
Also present at the events were volunteers from the USA and the UK who spoke about the importance of looking forward and being bold and confident as they face what is sure to be a sometimes difficult, but ultimately bright future. After the guest speakers, the students shared their experiences of the challenges they had to face throughout the application and admissions process and how the Asha staff helped them through these. They also spoke excitedly about how much they look forward to start with their courses.
On the 17th, the event culminated with a speech by Dr. Kiran Martin, who expressed her sincerest congratulations and deepest joy at the students’ success. She reminded them to always be grateful and appreciative for all they have accomplished, all the people who have helped them along the way and for all the good in their lives in general. She also congratulated each student individually and inquired if they were facing any other problems.
With the admission process still going on, Asha hopes more students will be able to get admission to Delhi University and other professional courses. Asha is extremely proud of these students and wishes them success as they begin this exciting new journey in their lives.
