It was a morning filled with great energy as over 300 from Asha slums across Delhi got together to attend a Students’ Meet organised under Asha’s Higher Education Programme on 18th December 2013.
Since its inception in 2008, Asha’s Higher Education Programme has sent over 900 students to university. In order to support the Asha team in its Higher Education Endeavour, Asha has formed a group comprising some of Asha’s most enthusiastic students willing to volunteer their time to help others like them. The 30-strong group, called as Asha Student Ambassadors, was introduced at the event where they took an oath to uphold the Asha values and promote the cause of education among the slum residents.

While addressing the students, Dr. Kiran encouraged them to go for higher education and be role models in their community like the Ambassadors. Also speaking at the event were few student Ambassadors who shared the stories of their higher education journey and promised to help and guide the younger students.

The Student Ambassadors will be conducting weekly meetings with other students in their area to address issues like answering exam papers, courses and colleges to apply for, and career prospects ahead. Some of them also plan to organise exchange visits to other slum colonies to address the students there. Adding to this, they will assist the Asha team in motivating the parents to allow their children, especially girls, to go for higher education.
With more and more students willing to motivate and guide their community, Asha is sure to achieve many more landmarks in its Higher Education Programme.
