Asha observes the World Hypertension Day
Due to the urban lifestyle and lack of awareness, the slum dwellers are also being affected by lifestyle illnesses such as Diabetes and Hypertension. In order to strengthen our program on Hypertension and Diabetes, this week, the Asha slum communities conducted special Screening Camps at the slum centres. Rallies were organized and door to door campaigns were made prior to the camps where children and women were roped in. As a result, there was an increased footfall in the camp. The Asha team was surprised to see many new hypertensive patients especially the youth. A major section of the patients was not even aware that they were hypertensive.
The team counselled the patients telling them about the importance of dietary restrictions and lifestyle changes. Cases with very high blood pressure were referred to the nearest government hospitals.
In future, Asha plans to organize these camps quarterly.
