Hira Devi gains back her vision with a new perspective on life
“I ignored the redness and itching of my right eye for a long time, in our community we learn not to make a big deal of small issues and I believed the same. As my eyesight got poorer, I started facing difficulties for simple tasks, such as eating food and taking care of my 3-year-old grandson, it was only then that I felt that my condition had deteriorated.
I have been associated with Asha in Anna Nagar Slum for 18 years, so I decided to seek help from them. The team in the Asha clinic checked my eyes and immediately referred me to Guru Teg Bahadur hospital, (One of the biggest Govt hospitals in Delhi) I was accompanied by the CHV to the hospital and was seen by the Head of the Department, Dr. Jolly Rohtagi, the Doctor informed me that I required immediate ‘Cataract Surgery’ as I had lost 70 percent of my vision. Within a week, all my tests were done and my Cataract Surgery was performed by Dr. Jolly herself.
I am thankful to Dr. Jolly and Asha because if I had gone to the hospital myself then I would have got a surgery appointment only after 3 months. After a few days of rest, I started regaining my vision slowly. Now I can take care of myself and my grandson. My family members are also very happy and relieved that my eye issue has finally been resolved.“
