Leela’s Journey of Hope with Asha’s Unwavering Support

Leela’s life journey is marked by both profound loss and unwavering hope. Thirty years ago, she and her husband left Bihar behind, hoping to build a better life in Delhi’s Zakhira slum. He found work as a laborer in a nearby factory, but they struggled to make ends meet. Life wasn’t easy, but they were together, raising their daughter and dreaming of a brighter future.

Then, four years ago, everything changed. Leela was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. The news was devastating, but thanks to the compassionate care of a senior nurse practitioner, Shainey at the Asha Centre, Leela was urged to undergo immediate surgery. The operation, though successful, took a toll on her both physically and emotionally—losing a part of herself along with one of her breasts.

Just as she began to recover, life dealt her another cruel blow. In 2022, Leela’s husband suddenly passed away, leaving her heartbroken and alone with the responsibility of raising their daughter. The grief was overwhelming, and the weight of supporting her family felt impossible.

But in her darkest moments, Asha stepped in. With their financial aid, monthly rations, and unwavering emotional support, they helped Leela find strength again. Though she still struggles, earning only Rs. 150-200 a day as a laborer, she no longer feels alone. Asha’s presence in her life reminds her that there’s hope even in the most difficult times.

Grateful beyond words, Leela now stands as a testament to the power of community and compassion. With Asha’s support, she continues to raise her daughter and face each day with courage, knowing she’s not alone in this fight.
