We, at Asha, decided to conduct a one-week long campaign- Plastic is drastic at all Asha centres. Understanding the fatal consequences of using plastic consistently, Asha slums pledged to promote healthy and plastic free environment.
The slums, already deprived and marginalized in terms of basic amenities, have stacks of plastic trash all around. The accumulated garbage draws the insects, mosquitoes and harmful bacteria leading the risk of terrible diseases to develop.
In order to minimize the after-effects, Asha slum communities held cleanliness drive amongst all the centres and reflected a marvellous endeavour by all the participants. Asha slum communities including Seelampur, Jeewan Nagar, Chanderpuri, Kusumpur Pahari, Dr Ambedkar Basti (DAB), Ekta Vihar etc. gathered to lend a hand in sweeping out the filth and segregating the plastic trash.
At a few sites, the community members called up Malaria Inspectors and also asked Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) workers to spray shots at the open-drains and channels. The Malaria inspectors visited their respective slums and examined the containers, coolers etc. to ensure no Dengue and Malaria mosquitoes can thrive.
Not only the women of Mahila Mandal (Women’s Association), Asha Graduates & college students but also the young tots of Baal Mandal (Children’s Association) helped mop the ground.
