Team from the River NYC works at Jeevan Nagar slum colony
On 17th November 2014, Asha had the great joy of welcoming a team of seven members from The River, New York to work at its slum based centre in Jeevan Nagar slum colony.
After a pilot visit earlier this year, the team returned to work with Asha for a full week. They engaged in activities like music and art sessions for kids and personality development workshops with university students. These workshops and classes were a fantastic opportunity for the kids and youth from Jeevan Nagar to learn English from people for whom it is a first language.
For the first time at Asha, the team was able to take two of the college students from the slums for a trip to Agra. The students were ecstatic as it was the first time they travelled as tourists. “The only time I have travelled in a train is to visit my village. It was so nice to see the Taj, it is so beautiful!” remarked Usha.
The team also spent time interacting with the community at the Asha centre to learn about their daily lives and its challenges. The students and women were also able to give them a flavour of Indian culture by welcoming the team into their homes. This led to the creation of countless wonderful relationships that continue to inspire and encourage both the slum dwellers and the River NYC team.
To thank the team for their efforts and support, Asha’s Founder and Director invited the team for a musical evening at her residence which was followed by a dinner.
