Prof Kiaran Kirk, Dean of ANU College of Science, Prof Penny Brothers, Director, Research School of Chemistry, Prof Peter Bouwknegt, Director, Mathematical Sciences Institute and Jay Poria, Manager – International Relations and Partnerships from Australia National University, paid a visit to Asha on 7th September 2019.
After a brief orientation at the Asha Polyclinic, they went to Asha’s Kanak Durga slum community. A short walk amidst the slum took them to the Asha centre where they were warmly welcomed by the Women’s Association (Mahila Mandal) and the College students.
Visitors spoke to the Asha College Students, Graduates and Ambassadors. To encourage and motivate the aspiring Asha students, Prof Penny said, “Education is the only key to success.” After an in-depth conversation with the Asha students the visitors were astonished to listen to the stories of the Mahila Mandal’s struggle in the initial years of Asha.
Looking at the background and socio-economic culture they belong to, the visitors applauded the students’ determination and courage to study amid such extreme circumstances.
Later, the team took a walk into the slum community to witness the life in the slum first hand. While biding adieu, Prof Kiaran Kirk shared, “Asha has been doing an exemplary job. It has been inspirational listening to the stories of transformation.”
