Against all odds- Shama’s story of resilience

Seventeen-year-old Shama Praveen from Asha’s Seelampur slum community has struggled hard to score 84.5% in her High School examination.

Shama got to know about Asha when few volunteers visited her school for career counseling. Joining Asha was a life building experience for her. Having received sample papers and extra classes from Asha during her High School year, Shama made sure she gave her best.

Nothing has come easy for Shama. Two years back, her father suffered a paralytic attack, leaving the family of seven children to depend solely on the mother and Shama, the eldest among her siblings. Together the mother-daughter duo has taken up mirror work to make a living.

Shama wants to pursue her career in teaching Urdu, but due to their financial crisis, her father is skeptical of sending Shama to regular college. Asha team in Seelampur have convinced the parents to give Shama a chance to go to college and have helped her in the online registration.

Keen on joining college, teary-eyed Shama shared, ‘’Before suffering from a paralytic attack, my father wanted all his children to receive education, but now he has not much hope left and wants all of us to stay home since he can’t afford it any more’’.

Asha believes that where you live shouldn’t be a barrier to who you can become, and so we try our best to reach out to the neediest in the slums.

Education has the power to change lives of girls like Shama. Your support will end their barrier to a bright future.
