Seeking a fairer and egalitarian society, the UN General Assembly inaugurated October 11, 2012, as an International Day of the Girl Child. The world rejoices the day every year with full of happiness and endless praises for all those girls who made us proud and content.
To support the cause and celebrate the birth of girl children, Asha decided to join hands and observe the day in its slums this year. The Asha slum communities had a week-long celebration at their respective centres and conducted multiple performances initiated by the college students, Asha Graduates and Children’s Association (Bal Mandal) members. The performances included street-plays, songs, rallies, self-defence classes and much more. Children along with the help of their seniors made posters, placards and rallied carrying those across the slums to raise public awareness about the female foeticide.
Asha’s new centres, BIW Camp, V.P Singh camp and Kalyan Camp which are running without a building, held the grand celebration inviting all the members of the community at one place. Everybody lauded their efforts for it is quite difficult to work in such an area where no washroom or lavatory facility is available. But, the Asha staff, children and community did justice to their job and did a tremendous job that fetched them a huge round of applause.
At all the centres, the community members discussed the types of discrimination, a girl faces by all her life. They shared opinions on how we can stop the gender discrimination and help women grow to excel fairly.
In the end, all the community members vowed to treat both the genders equally and propagated the idea of celebrating the birth of a girl child. Here are a few glimpses:
