Asha Students successfully complete British Council English Classes

With support from the Big British Curry Night 2015, an annual fundraising event at Great Britain, we were able to raise funds for the pilot run of Business English classes for Asha students. These classes were facilitated by the British Council India, who waived the fees by 50% for our students.

The Advance Business English course for two batches of pre-intermediate and intermediate levels began in July 2015. During the five-month schedule, the students learnt advanced written and verbal communication skills in Business English.

Completion of this course has paved way for the students to apply for jobs which require for them to be conversant in English. Phozia Khatoon and Dilip Singh, both graduates from Ekta Vihar slum colony, are only two examples of how the students are putting the skills they have learnt to practice…

“The course happened just at the right time for me, I had just joined Rio Tinto. I was able to practice everything I learnt here almost simultaneously during my initial six months there,” says Dilip. He has secured a permanent job in the role of HR Associate at Australian mining firm, Rio Tinto after acing through his temporary six-month contract at the firm.

IMG_1289 (2)Phozia, a once shy and reserved girl, is now working in the visa processing firm VFS Global, handling visa applicants from myriad ethnicities each day. “Though I knew the [English] language, I was always hesitant – fearing I’d never get it right. This course has not only taught us the nuances of interacting at workplace, but has also made me more confident,” remarks Phozia.

Ms Harmeet Kaur, the British Council trainer did a commendable job by encouraging the students to learn English by not just regular practice exercises but also through fun and creative learning methods.

Here are a few glimpses of the course…
