Asha topper from Mayapuri scores 94.75%
Asha’s High School batch 2018 topper is a nineteen-year-old girl Simpal, who scored a whopping 94.75% (A+ Grade). What makes her achievement worth mentioning is the challenging circumstances she has overcome to emerge as a winner. A resident of Mayapuri slum colony, known for being the largest scrap market in India, Simpal’s father works as a crane driver and mother a homemaker.
Simpal’s tryst with Asha began well before her birth. “I am basically an Asha baby. When my mother was pregnant with me, she came to Asha for her check-ups. At the age of seven, I joined the Bal Mandal (children’s association) and its activities was a natural progression arising from the comfort levels that I had started sharing with Asha centre and its staff”, shares Simpal. A diligent student all along, she secured 100% in Political Science.
An atmosphere characterized by dilapidated roofs, poorly ventilated overcrowded rooms and lack of basic sanitation facilities, Simpal’s journey became more challenging when she was diagnosed with pulmonary TB last year. She was devastated and felt helpless. With Asha’s guidance and counseling, Simpal started her medication and was determined to get through her class 12 examinations.
Her perseverance has paved the way towards better prospects in life. Simpal wants to pursue a career in teaching Political Science.
It is the experience of students like these that inspire us to move ahead with a strong belief and a stronger resolve.
