In the narrow, dusty lanes of Ekta Vihar slum, where hardship often overshadows hope, a small spark of life named Ayush was born. His first cries brought tears of joy to his parents’ eyes — not just because he was their second child, but because he entered the world strong and healthy, weighing a full 3.5 kg. In a home filled with uncertainty, Ayush was a symbol of possibility, a reason to dream.
But dreams can shatter quickly when poverty stands at the door.
When Ayush was just four months old, his father lost his job — the family’s only source of income. The laughter and lullabies in their small home were replaced by silence and worry. Struggling to put food on the table, Ayush’s mother packed her children and fled to their native village, hoping for a sliver of relief. There, for a brief time, Ayush continued to thrive, reaching 9 kg by the time he was nine months old.

But survival in the village was not sustainable. The family returned to Ekta Vihar, only to find life had grown even harsher. Ayush’s father remained jobless, and his mother was forced to clean other people’s homes just to earn a few rupees. With no one to care for him, Ayush was left under the watch of his five-year-old sister — a child asked to shoulder the burden of motherhood far too early.
Day by day, Ayush withered. His playful giggles faded. His appetite disappeared. His body shrank and weakened. Frequent infections stole what little strength he had. The light in his eyes dimmed.
It was during a door-to-door survey that an Asha Community Health Volunteer spotted him. What she saw was heartbreaking — a child in the grip of severe malnutrition, barely able to sit upright, his tiny limbs thin as twigs. His mother, gaunt and exhausted, held back tears as she shared how helpless she felt watching her son fade before her eyes.
But that day marked a turning point.
The Asha Health Team immediately stepped in, embracing the family with compassion and action. Ayush was enrolled in Asha’s intensive care program at the Well Baby Clinic. Every day, he received crucial micronutrients, calcium, zinc, vitamins, and the lifesaving high-protein laddoos lovingly made by Asha’s team. His parents were guided on preparing simple, affordable, nutritious meals. Most importantly, they were not alone anymore.

With daily home visits, medical support, and emotional encouragement, a slow miracle began to unfold. Ayush’s fragile body began gaining strength. The color returned to his cheeks. His little fingers grasped his mother’s hand with new energy. His weight steadily rose — from the danger zone to safety.
Today, Ayush weighs a healthy 11.5 kg. He has moved into the green zone of the MAC Band — a sign that he’s not just surviving, but truly healing.
But his story is more than just numbers. It’s a testament to a mother’s quiet courage, a community’s resilience, and the transformative power of love and care. In Ayush’s bright eyes now shines not just health, but hope — for a future where no child is left behind.
